Starfleet

his job

This part of the shrine is about Starfleet, but there are so many information about it, that in the next paragraphs, we’ll simply try to concentrate on the parts that in some way has something to do with Spock. That means that this page will be divided in a few parts that will consist of general information about Starfleet, few words about ranks and maybe something more about the rank Commander, about the Science Officer’s position and naturally something about the Enterprise.

STARFLEET – OVERAL

Starfleet is the military and deep-space service that works for the UFP. More often they are described as the peacekeepers, and they come to attack only if there is need to defend themselves. The main point of this service is to advance in deeper space and expand Federation’s knowledge of the unknown galaxy and the people they met there.
Starfleet wasn’t born when the UFP was, at the beginning it served for the United Earth and only after the union, it expanded becoming a service for the Federation.
The first ship Starfleet lunched into space was Enterprise NX-01 in 2151 (her captain was Jonathan Archer). It had a great role in leading to the creation of the Federation and thus to Starfleet becoming a service of the UFP.
In the 2161 with the creation of the United Federation of Planets it's put under its authority, and after the 2290 most, if not all, the operations are regulated by the Starfleet command, which answers directly to the Federation President and the Federation Council.

STARFLEET – RANKS

The first thing we can notice is that the ranks in Starfleet reminds us of the ones of the American Navy and British Royal Navy, which is not strange considering that Starfleet has ships, traveling space rather than seas, but ships no less.

  • Fleet Admiral
  • Admiral
  • Vice Admiral
  • Rear Admiral
  • Commodore
  • Captain
  • Commander
  • Lieutenant Commander
  • Lieutenant
  • Lieutenant junior grade
  • Ensign
  • Master Chief Petty Officer
  • Senior Chief Petty Officer
  • Chief Petty Officerr
  • Petty Officer
  • crewman

We’ll talk a little more about the rank of Commander, because that’s Spock’s rank in the series. The Commander rank in Star Trek is normally the holder of the position of First Officer on a ship.
The First Officer is the person assigned to be the second-in-command, which means that in ranking order they are the one just below the Captain. The job of the First Officer is to advice the Captain, implement the Captain’s order, prepare and issue the duty roster, command the ship if something happens to the Captain (absence, sickness, death).
A Commander can also be the person that is a commanding officer on a smaller space station or starbase.

Along with the position of First Officer, Spock holds also the position of the Science Officer, a position which makes him part of the senior staff and allows him to have a post designated on the bridge where he can monitor the readings. The job of the Science Officer is actually to observe, explain or at least theorize about the strange things that happen around them. Aside this the science officer must collect as much data as possible and also must supply his Captain or commanding officer with information about everything that can affect the safety of the ship or vessel.

STARFLEET – ENTERPRISE

First we must apologize, but we’ll be referring to the ship as “she” or “the lady” aside her name, that is probably Kirk's and Scotty’s fault.

As stated before the Enterprise was the first vessel made and lunched by Starfleet, ten years before the UFP was created. That particular vessel was the NX-01, captained by Jonathan Archer, and that can be seen in the Star Trek: Enterprise series.
She was the first human vessel having the warp 5 engines and equipped with a transporter used also for human beings. She was launched in space on April 12th 2051, and because she was launched before the scheduled time, she went in space with some problems, like phaser cannons not being installed and similar.
The first Enterprise held 83 humans, a Vulcan (T’Pol) and a Denobulan (Dr. Phlox).

The Enterprise that interests us is the NCC-1701. She became the most famous ship while being under the command team: James T. Kirk as Captain and Mr. Spock as his First Officer, during their five year mission. This is the Enterprise of The Original Series. The lady is a heavy cruiser type starship and was commissioned by Federation Starfleet. The officer that served the longest on the NCC-1701 was Spock, who before serving under James T. Kirk has served for 11 years under Captain Christopher Pike as his Science Officer.
She was destroyed in 2285 in the third move: Star Trek III – The Search for Spock.

The USS Enterprise NCC-1701-A is the second Enterprise and she was also commissioned by Federation and was constructed in San Francisco Fleet Yard. She appears the first time in the forth movie Star Trek IV: The Voyage home, as the surprise ship given to the Enterprise crew who thought they would be getting the Excelsior.

And then there is the Enterprise NCC-1701 from the Star Trek 2009, or we shall call it the alternate universe. The first thing we know about this Enterprise is that she was constructed in Riverside, Iowa. She appeared bigger and more sophisticated that the Original Series Enterprises. Her maiden voyage was captained by Christopher Pike, had Spock as acting captain, and then got in the end in the hands of Captain James T. Kirk.
